Dongguan shopping guide

Dongguan (东莞 Dōngguān) is in Guangdong Province in China, about 100km from Hong Kong.

The city is about one hours drive away from Shenzhen and Guangzhou's Baiyun airports. You can catch a train or bus from these cities.Hong Kong's Mass Transit Railway offers service (the former Kowloon-Canton Railway service) from Hung Hom Station in Hong Kong to Guangzhou with a stop in Dongguan. As of April 2008, the one-way fare is HK$145. The fare is payable in either RMB or HKD.
There is also a frequent rail shuttle service from Dongguan Station to both Shenzhen and Guangzhou.
The most popular method for Hong Kong locals to travel to Dongguan is by bus. There are several companies that offer bus travel to Dongguan from Hong Kong. A good place to find a bus, would be at the bus stands inside the arrival terminal at Hong Kong Airport. Prices are usually $80-100 for a one-way ticket or $150 for a two-way ticket. Travel times usually are 1.5-2.5 hours depending on traffic conditions. If you are traveling from another part of China, you can also travel to Dongguan by bus, most major cities in China will have bus routes to the Dongguan Main Bus Station in Nancheng.

The best method for visitors to get around, is taxi. Taxi's are cheap, and a 30 minute ride should not cost more then RMB80. Beware however, some taxis are used for kidnapping. Be sure to only use the green, licensed Dongguan taxis. Buses cost ¥1 per ride, beware of the aggresive driving however.

Dongguan has an exhibition center in Dongguan city houses many exhibitions and conferences. There is also a sports center for locals, and Dongguan library in Dongguan city. Pick up a copy of Here Dongguan, an English-language magazine with a nice guide to the city. If you only have a day and want to stay in one area, you might start at Jin'aozhou Pagoda, go east and see Keyuan Garden, and then walk along Dongcheng Avenue (東城大道) for shopping and food. It is not too far to bar street, where you can check out some pretty hopping clubs.

Most 4 Star hotels will have various "foot" massages and sauna services for upwards of 150RMB. NOTE : Nearly all sauna's are brothels! Foot massage parlors might be brothels

Dongguan is well known for its Huanghe Fashion Town located in the Humen District along Renming Road, Renyi Road, Jinglong Road and Yinglong Road. The district houses one of China's largest clothing and textile wholesale markets, which extends over an area of about one square kilometre. Many of the products sold there are exported to Hong Kong and the rest of the world. Everybody can enjoy low wholesale prices, even when buying in small quantities.

Muslim food is very simple to fine here, these are around ¥30-60 for breakfast, ¥100-200+ for lunch, and ¥100-300+ for dinner.

Dongguan has more then 30 government-rated 5-star hotels.

Crown Prince Hotel, Huangjiang.

An excellent 5 star hotel. Certainly worth a visit with excellent facilities, and even its own 'opera' house presenting superb show extravaganzas (do not be mislead by the 'opera' title).

The Dongcheng International

(Centrally located and is within walking distance of the Walking Street). Quite old and does not have the best buffet in town.

Grand Noble, Humen Town.

The first 5-star business hotel to open in Dongguan. It is centrally located and convenient to shopping and dining options. In-house restaurants feature Cantonese, Japanese, American, and Italian foods.

Hyatt Regency Dongguan,

Song Shan Lake Central District, Science and Technology Industrial Park, Qinyuan Road (in the business district), ☎ +86 769 2289 1234 (info.regencydongguan@hyattintl.com). 5 star hotel with 350 rooms and suites, a 2,500 sq-metre Convention and Exhibition Centre, a 1,800 sq m freeform swimming pool and a spa. edit The Hyatt Regency is decent and big, but very inconvenient in location. It is also expensive compared to the other hotels, and the buffet is overpriced.

Pullman Dongguan Forum,

32 Dongchengzhong Road, ☎ +86 769 23368888.
This new hotel is a charming low rise Chinese style hotel adjoining a museum and art gallery and offers private access to the famous Qifeng Mountain. Guests enjoy a choice of restaurants, private rooms, meeting rooms for over 400 delegates, spa, gymnasium.

Richwood Garden Hotel, Humen Town.

While a bit out of the way, is spectacular in design and construction. The restaurants, particularly the Chinese and Southeast Asian restaurants, are also some of the best in the area.

Sofitel Royal Lagoon Hotel,

(Near Qifeng Park). Secluded and set back away from the main road. It has a resort type feel and even has its own water park. A 36 hole golf course is adjacent to the property. Quite expensive.

As in all of China, be careful. You can be robbed, especially in less populated areas. Prostitution is widespread in Dongguan, and many men from Guangzhou and Shenzhen flock here on the weekends. Karaoke bars are basically another word for brothel. The law on prostitution is not enforced here as of 2008. However, do not gamble! You will end up in jail for possibly, a long time if you are caught gambling, save it for Macau. Lastly, a lot of the police force is corrupted, but since the government is still watching over them, they are discrete. So if a policeman tries to get money from you, calmly reply to him to see a superior.

Guangzhou :Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

Guangzhou Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is really a magnificent building in the shape of octangle. It is not only one of the symbolic constructions in Guangzhou with its majestic appearance and the infused rich Chinese national color, but also an important place for large scale meeting and performance.

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is built in order to commemorate the contributions of Sun Zhongshan, the great predecessor of Chinese revolution for democracy. It is a memorial construction donated by the people in Guangzhou and the overseas Chinese and is listed as one of the first class cultural relics in Guangdong Province. Designed by the famous Chinese architect, Mr. Lu Yanzhi, the construction started in 1929 and finished in October of 1931.

Before the liberation, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall has already been badly damaged due to the lack of attention. After the liberation, our government has particularly appropriated some funds for several times to repair the memorial hall. Finally, in 1998, there appeared the completely new memorial hall after the careful repair. The memorial hall and the courtyard together cover an area of 62,000 square meters with the 6,600-square-meter's major building with a framework of steel work and reinforced concrete.

In the front of the memorial hall, there erects the statue of Mr. Sun Zhongshan. And there hangs a golden slab with four Chinese characters of "Tian Xia Wei Gong" written by Sun Yat-sen himself above the front door of the memorial hall. With the statue and the slab reflecting and corresponding to each other, there forms a magnificent scene which reminds people of the brilliant life experience of the great man.

The central coping of the octagon pavilion of the Zhongshan Memorial Hall is surrounded by the four decorating double eaves from the front, back, left, and right sides of it. The whole construction is majestic, solemn and rich in Chinese national culture. Inside the memorial hall, there are tall and straight ancient but precious trees and cloud pillars with lifelike cranes on them, presenting a magnificent scene. Around the memorial hall, yellow walls and red pillars decorated by blue glazed tiles, are shining in the sun, showing the resplendence and solemnity. Back of the memorial hall, there is the Zhongshan Monument erecting on the top of Yuexiu Mountain. The monument is so remarkable and stately that it seems to go clean through the sky. The audience house inside the memorial hall, with a domed roof which is a huge embedded sprung roof made of glasses that has no supporting pillars to impair the view but rarely produces echoes, is an outstanding construction among world-famous architecture.

Travel Tips

There are wheel chairs for the disabled and special passage for wheel chairs inside the memorial hall. At the same time, there are also crutches for aged people and baby carriages and toys for children.

Metro: Line 2 ,stop at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Station

Temple of The Six Banyan Trees

Some of the buildings in Guangzhou are incredibley old, most notable of which are the Temple Of The Six Banyan Trees and Guangxiao Temple, some of the oldest standing structures in the whole of China. Other buildings have been demolished and others added over the ages, creating a wonderful blend of architecture.

Guangzhou is under constant, systematic development. If you look at a map, the centre of the city has developed well; a mix of the best of old and new with a few parks thrown in for good measure. Leaving this area you'll find countless apartment blocks and slums, thrown up over the last 50 or so years.

Citic Plaza

Moving further east is the modern, grid-based and aptly named 'New Town' with buildings such as The CITIC Plaza. Where the slums meet this area you'll find piles of rubble. The non-descript parts of the city are gradually being raised to the ground and rebuilt on an astonishing scale. Exactly where all the impoverished slum-dwellers will live when their homes are knocked down and replaced with glass skyscrapers is anyone’s guess. New Town has plenty of residential blocks but clearly not enough to provide shelter for everyone.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on Guangzhou, so please take a look at my tips and I hope that they contribute to you deciding to pay your own visit...

Shenzen (Window of The World)

Shenzhen Window of the World is a fantastic replica park situated at the Overseas Chinese Town. Here you can see vivid replicas of the world's wonders, historical heritages and famous scenic sites. The entire masterpiece is built at ratios of 1:1, 1:5 or 1:15.

Within one day, you can visit many reproductions of famous sites from different countries. For example you can find the Mahamuni Pagoda of Mandalay and the Angkor Wat of Cambodia here. European architectural splendors, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Ancient Athens, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Tower of London will carry you back to the cradle of classical European culture. When you tour the miniature Roman Colosseum, you might notice a cruel and bloody scene. Enjoy the picturesque scenery as you take a gondola along the canals of Venice. Mysterious Africa is always full of life and vigor. Here, the Pyramids and the Sphinx are quietly waiting for your visit. After traveling through typical African hamlets, you come to the Oceania. Sydney Opera House, which boasts a unique style, is a landmark not only of Australia but also the whole Oceania. Looking from a distance, it looks like a luminous pearl on the vast expanse of blue sea water. The rumbles of Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon lead you to the America, a young continent. These two natural wonders are awe-inspiring. Moving on to modern civilization, in the replica of Manhattan you will see rows of towering skyscrapers. No wonder they say the rhythm of life speeds up here.

Window of the World is full of foreign flavors.Visiting during a festival time is another way to experience this replica park. Annually the park holds the Cherry Festival and the Indian Cultural Week. During the Cherry Festival, wandering in the cherry garden of Japan and taking a cup of tea will refresh you. Window of the World runs many programs during holiday periods too. In the summer holiday, the International Beer Festival is a big tourist attraction. Probably, the Pop Music Festival is the favorite of young people. This is held on China's National Day. In December, Santa Claus welcomes New Year's approach. Following this the World Dance and Singing Gala is held during the Spring Festival. Taking part in the entertainment activities complements your travel plan.

There are a number of adventure trips for you to choose from. For example, test your courage by navigating the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. In the Archery Field, tourists may follow the ways of North American Indians and learn to hunt prey in the lush woods. Even more exciting is to traverse the primitive tropical forest in a cable car. Skiing in a subtropical city might sound strange, but the Indoor Alpine Ski Run in Shenzhen Window of the World offers you four thousand square meters (about 6,200,012 square feet) of indoor piste to ski.

Shenzhen Window of the World has a lot more to offer. You will have a good day in this miniature world.

Dongmen Shopping Area

Dong Men is a shopping district consisting of department stores, supermarkets, shops and stalls. It is centered on two parallel pedestrian streets with several smaller streets and alleys traversing it, creating a labyrinth in which every available space is used to sell something. Shops range from holes-in-the-wall to retail chains like Baleno, Giordano and the odd foreign brand shop, such as Addidas. Fashion wear, sports wear, jewellery, shoes, handbags, toys, CDs, DVDs, video games, traditional medicine…the list goes on and on. Touts guide punters to massage houses, nail salons and tattoo parlors. Occasionally, monks offer palm readings. Except for retail chain stores with prices clearly displayed, bargaining will be required.
